Cleaning Your Velvet Upholstery The Natural Way

Blog

When it comes to upholstered furniture, each material type requires a different cleaning method; so, you'll want to talk to your furniture manufacturer or to a professional, like Atlantic Carpet Care, to make sure you are using the proper cleaning method for each textile variation. For instance, If you need to clean your velvet sofa or chair, it's important that you don't use water to get it cleaned. Water can cause the fibers of velvet to become flattened and damaged and may also leave water spots. Here is an easy, all-natural way to get your velvet furniture looking as good as new.

Preparation

The cleaning mixture you make will include a combination of baking soda and lemon juice, so get those items ready before you begin to clean. You will also need a glass bowl, a soft clean rag or wash cloth, and a working vacuum cleaner with an attachment. The attachment should preferably be one with a brush. Before you apply the mixture, thoroughly vacuum your velvet furniture using the attachment to remove any debris and dust. Pay special attention to the crevices in the piping around the edges of your piece. Vacuuming first will give you a smooth and mostly clean surface to work with before you begin using the mixture.

Making The Solution

Using the glass bowl, combine approximately two tablespoons of baking soda with lemon juice until it begins to foam. You can adjust the amount of lemon juice, adding it until it reaches a consistency you prefer. Use a larger-sized bowl if you plan to clean the entire piece of furniture rather than doing some spot cleaning; you may need to add more baking soda as you go. Stir the mixture thoroughly using a spoon until the baking soda has completely dissolved into the lemon juice.

Cleaning The Velvet

Once your mixture is ready to go, dip your cloth or wash rag into the bowl and gently wipe the velvet upholstery. Do not apply too much pressure or it can damage the nap, or texture of the velvet upholstery. Instead, use long sweeping motions and never rub the rag in circles into your velvet. The solution should gently lift away any stains or dirt, leaving behind a clean surface. Make sure you let the velvet dry for at least a few hours before sitting on your chair or sofa so it can return to its natural, soft texture. This method is a quick and easy way to clean your velvet upholstery so it looks beautiful without causing any damage.

An Easter Celebration

Growing up, I was extremely close to my family. In fact, I lived with my parents and my sister until I married my husband eleven years ago. Unfortunately, I moved seventy-five long miles away from my family after my wedding. But I still visit my childhood home at least once each month. Our growing family also still celebrates all of the major holidays including Easter. Because my husband and I plan to start a family soon, we hope to begin hosting more family gatherings at our home. When this takes happens, I know I will need help cleaning my house. On this blog, I hope you will discover how hiring cleaning services can help you plan a stress-free Easter celebration.
